Are you over spending hours at the salon for a fresh set of nails? Maybe it’s worth the trip for special occasions or when the mood for a professional done-for-you mani strikes, but for everyday use, press-on nails are my savior.

Over the past few years, I’ve been wearing press-on nails regularly, and they’ve changed my life for the better. Not only are they affordable and easy to apply (takes just about 10-15 minutes!), but they also come in a variety of colors, designs, and shapes.

This makes it so convenient to switch up your nail look at any time.

I first heard about press-on nails from my friend Marina during dinner one night. I loved her nails and couldn’t believe it when she told me she did her manicure herself using the imPRESS press-on nails.

But I had a lot of questions about its wearability. After trying lots and lots of styles from other brands, I’ve learned the best tips and tricks to share.

Here, I also spoke with Gina Edwards, celebrity manicurist and imPRESS brand ambassador, who shares her perspective.

Read on for a comprehensive guide on everything you need to know — from application to removal, how long they last, and more.

First things first, what are press-on nails?

Simply put, press-on nails are artificial nails that “press” onto your natural nails.

There are two kinds: peel-and-press (the kind that comes with adhesive tabs) and glue-on.

imPRESS is a line of press-on nails that specifically uses adhesive tabs. It’s part of KISS USA, a brand that also carries glue-on style nails.

Both can be applied in minutes at home for salon-like results. They come in a variety of styles, from detailed designs to solid colors.

What are the benefits of using press-on nails?

Edwards mentions that they’re perfect for recovery after you’ve removed your gels or acrylics. “Press-ons allow weak nails to be protected,” she says, adding, “They are also convenient for achieving a beautiful manicure quickly and easily.”

And of course, these styles save time from going to the salon, they don’t chip or lose shine, are affordable (each pack usually costs well under $20), and make it easy to switch up your look to match any outfit.

These are also the ultimate travel-friendly manis since each set is lightweight, easy to pack, doesn’t require messy liquid tools, and doesn’t require a dry time. It’s also great for everyday commuting. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve applied press-on nails while en route somewhere!

How long does press-on nails last?

“imPRESS manicures last up to seven days,” says Edwards. Other press-on nail brands I’ve tried also last within this timeframe, give or take a couple of days, depending on your lifestyle.

How do you make them last longer?

One key tip from Edwards: Before applying, “Always work on a dry, cleansed nail and use an alcohol wipe to remove any excess oil. imPRESS packages include an alcohol prep pad, and this step should not be missed!”

A few years ago, when I first tried these press-on nails, one or more would usually fall off within the first couple of days. It was really annoying, to be honest, but recently imPRESS updated their formula to provide much better adhesive hold. Now, my manicures usually last about a week without falling off. If a nail does fall off for any reason, I easily reapply it with a bit of nail glue or replace it with a fresh one.

Are press-on nails better for your natural nails?

Everyone may have different reactions depending on their nails and skin. For me, press-on nails with adhesive tabs feel healthier because I can avoid harsh chemicals and UV curing, and I don’t have to remove them with nail polish remover.

They also double as a protective shield for my natural nails.

When I remove them, there may be a bit of adhesive or glue residue, but it comes off easily, and I haven’t had any issues with it.

“Press-on nails offer a better alternative for those who don’t want a long-term commitment like gel or acrylic nails,” says Edwards.

To keep my nails in good shape, I usually take a break for a few days between manicures (no matter what kind) to give them a chance to breathe between applications.

Each nail set comes with detailed instructions according to each brand. Here’s how I personally apply them:

How to apply

  1. Prep by clipping your nails:
In my opinion, short natural nails as a base make press-ons look more polished. If you have long, natural nails, they tend to show when you flip your hand.

  2. Clean your nails:
As Edwards mentioned, cleaning your nails is an important step that affects how long your press-on nails last. Wash your hands with soap and water, then use an alcohol prep pad to remove any oils before applying.

  3. Choose your nail sizes:
Most come with small numbers on each nail indicating the sizes. The higher the number, the smaller the nail (for example, my pinky finger is an 11). Lining up all your press-on nails beforehand makes the process easier.

Tip: Write down the numbers for your nail sizes to create an easy reference guide on the perfect fit for future applications.

  4. Time to apply:
Apply each nail one finger at a time (either press it on directly if it’s the peel-and-press style or apply with nail glue if it’s the glue-on style). Hold each nail down for about 20 seconds.

  5. File and Smooth:
After applying, I like to use a nail file (a mini one is usually included in the kit) to smooth the edges of the press-on nail.

Can press-on nails be reused?

It depends on the quality of the nail. Sometimes a press-on nail falls off, but it’s still in good condition, so I can glue it back on. If it’s not in the best shape, I’ll usually just use another press-on nail from the package.

Do they stay on in the shower?

Most of the time, yes. Just keep your hands dry for about an hour after you apply them to make sure the adhesive sets properly.

But overall, they’re designed for everyday use. If one or more nails fall off, remember you can always reapply them easily.

How to remove

“Press-on nails can be removed with warm water and a little olive oil,” says Edwards, who mentions that steam is also great for removal. She also recommends “use a manicure stick around the nail to help the nail lift from the nail bed.” Each imPRESS package includes a wooden cuticle stick, making this step super easy.

Sometimes, after wearing them for a week, I find they come off pretty easily just by peeling them off. But taking a little extra time to follow the steps above can be better for your nails.

What press-on nails are the best?

As much as I always love trying different colors and designs, my absolute favorites are the imPRESS French tip press-on nails. This bundle includes four different takes on the classic design, making it suitable for every occasion and outfit.

Another collection I love from the brand is colorFX press-on nails. “These give a multi-faceted depth perception of color that takes on various tones in different lighting; these chrome and magnetic shades are very trendy,” says Edwards.

Also, I mostly wear short almond nails because long nails make it hard to type on my computer keyboard, and the length of these is perfect. Recently, I’ve also been loving the short squoval (a mix of square and oval) shape.

For special events where I’m not constantly typing or doing household chores, I go for an elevated long almond shape.

It’s also fun to switch it up sometimes with bold styles like short square red nailspink floral nails, or blue-and-white swirl nails.

Overall, the best way to find which press-on nails fit you is to experiment 😊

Try different styles, lengths, and brands to find the ones you love most for your dream manicure. Trust me, it’s worth it!
