Seven years ago, I met designer Valentina Perissi after seeing one of her DAFNE Italy hand-painted leather jackets at Miami Art Basel.
From our first conversation to now, I’ve always loved hearing her perspective on design — how art can be something you wear, not just framed on a wall.
In addition to her signature hand-painted leather jackets, her accessories (including handbags and jewelry) weave in the message of empowering you to follow your dreams.
Whether it be the brand’s eye logo or a positive affirmation like “Believe In You” and “Women of Power”, each custom design is made to be a source of motivation.
After many years experience working with top fashion houses, including as a creative director at Roberto Cavalli, Valentina moved from Florence, Italy, to New York City. She launched DAFNE Italy, focusing on a detailed painting process and bespoke design.
“I fell in love with the energy of the city,” she says, reminiscing on the first time she visited New York at 11 years old. “I knew that if I were to ever do something big, it would be in New York.”
Recently, we caught up at her trunk show at Guerlain Wellness Spa at the Waldorf Astoria New York.
I loved seeing the range of new pieces from the collection up close. The hand-painted designs are just stunning in person! Some are adorned with large flowers, some are finished with feathers, and all of them are unique.

The Story Behind DAFNE Italy’s Hand-Painted Leather Jackets & Accessories
What’s the inspiration behind your hand-painted leather jackets and accessories?
VP: “It’s always been to feel powerful and to empower each other. It’s art fashion, so you can wear your art instead of just having it hang on a wall. To me, the eye [DAFNE Italy’s logo] is about discovering your vision and meaning in life. I always say, you only have one life—keep living and growing every day.”
What advice would you give your younger self with a big dream?
VP: “Look, keep dreaming. Some people will tell you not to do it because it’s hard. Do it. It’s your life — you don’t know how long it’s gonna be. You have to be your own visionary and manifest. I manifest so much from when I was a little kid in Italy, about coming to New York one day, I didn’t even know how. And now I’m here. So when they say to never stop dreaming, for real, because again, some people are just scared. You just have to be fearless. I know it’s hard to say, but it’s the only reality.”
Where do you see the future of your brand headed?
VP: “Of course, the US, mainly Italy, Europe, everywhere. One of my clients just bought a jacket and lives in Japan. So, having my stuff there as well. This is the goal. And to help others — I also do a lot of charity things with my art.”
