5 Heartfelt Ways to Celebrate Mother’s Day

How to make it personal and fun.

Mother’s Day gift ideas and more coming your way. This post is sponsored by Papyrus and Albertsons. As always, all opinions are my own.

Happy Mother’s Day! What’s more heartfelt than a thoughtful Papyrus card?

Mother’s Day gifts are so much more valuable when it’s personal. While the traditional box of chocolates or bottle of wine are sweet gestures, going the extra mile to give your mom something undoubtedly just for her says something much more.

If your mom is anything like mine, she always says she doesn’t want anything other than to spend time together. I’m grateful that she’s only a train ride away on Long Island, but even if you’re toasting the holiday virtually, you can still make it personal. The key? Get creative and infuse her personality into the celebration.

Whether you’re near or far from the mom in your life this year, read on for Mother’s Day gift ideas and ways to celebrate.

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION IDEAS

Mother’s Day marks an opportunity to express how much the women in your life mean to you—and there’s no better way than to say it with a card.

SEND HER A PAPYRUS CARD

I love Papyrus cards since the designs are gorgeous and the quality of the paper feels so luxe. The lining of the envelopes and the gold signature hummingbird stickers remind me that details matter. I got my Papyrus cards at Albertsons where you can buy all your household items in-store or through their app.

From the designs to the handwritten notes inside, cards are a thoughtful way to express your feelings—and they double as a keepsake! Inside, write something from your heart—maybe an inside joke or a memory from your childhood. I always write “I love you” in Chinese characters to my mom since she taught me how to write them. This year, I’ll be adding photos of my sister and me when we were kids to make it more special.

Mail the card to the mom in your life if you won’t be together on Mother’s Day. Or give it to her in person along with a DIY gift basket filled with things that she loves. (For my mom, that would be fresh fruits and avocados.)

Years ago when I was in college, my mom would send me fruit baskets during the week of finals. This time around, she’s getting one—along with this pineapple-designed Mother’s Day card!

COOK A HOMEMADE MEAL

Food is a universal way to bring people together, so cooking with your mom can be a fun activity. First, think about what kind of meal she enjoys the most. Does she always order soup with noodles and veggies when you’re dining out? Or is she a pizza lover? Prepare in advance by buying all the ingredients and surprising her with the plans (or send her everything she needs to cook and hold a Zoom call, from your kitchen to hers).

RELAX WITH A SPA DAY

Whether you feel stressed or not, taking a spa day is always a good idea. Treat your mom to an at-home spa or mail her a box of self-care essentials. There’s nothing like a good face mask or mani and pedi to brighten up a day.

TAKE UP GARDENING

Although my mom is not a huge fan of gardening, my godmother is. For as long as I can remember, she would keep her front yard and backyard filled with flowers. And I can see why: there’s something satisfying about planting seeds and watching them grow. It would be fun to garden with her and see the process.

For gardening alternatives to enjoy with the mom in your life, take a flower arranging class or go for a stroll through the park.

HOST A TEA PARTY

Like many things in life, my mom is right: the best Mother’s Day gift is spending time together. Another family bonding idea? Hosting a tea party. Yes, time to break out the fancy porcelain tea cups and dessert plates. Better yet, bake some sweet treats right before so you can sit down and enjoy an afternoon snack together.

Of course, I have to give my older sister, Linda, a Mother’s Day card, too. She’s also mom to my ten-year-old nephew, Tristan.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

To build excitement for whichever Mother’s Day gifts you choose, note an itinerary of the plans in your Papyrus card. And with that, wishing you and yours a happy Mother’s Day!

Xo,
Wendy
