The theme of the show? Happiness.

“Happiness” was last night’s theme at the Runway Marc Jacobs FW21 show. The designer revealed a hint two weeks ago with that one word in an Instagram caption alongside the date 6.28.21 on a sunshine shade of yellow background. The anticipation was high…and worth the wait.

Held at The New York Public Library, the show was also played on a projector—outdoor movie-style—on the iconic façade of Bergdorf Goodman. As the sun went down, the screen expanded while passersby walking down 5th and 58th stopped to look up.

Although it was a night of 90-something degree heat, seeing the oversized printed coats felt relevant in the here and now. Maybe it’s the pop of red, pink, and green, or the futuristic feel of these pieces, that can be thought of as a comforting light at the end of the tunnel for the past year of COVID.

Runway Marc Jacobs: FW21 Collection

The collection marks Jacobs’ first show since February 2020 after skipping the past two seasons. Typically shown in February, this fall/winter collection is filled with unexpected surprises. It merges styles like an iridescent sequin dress layered over a black turtleneck with platform Mary Janes and topped off with a beanie. But then again, when has Jacobs’ designs ever been expected?

Down the runway also came cut-out turtlenecks, wide-legged pants, puffer coats, faux fur scarves, bucket hats, caps, snoods, and hoods. Neutral separates felt less serious alongside pieces of violet, yellow, red, and mint green.

Overall, it still felt very Marc Jacobs—with an elevated twist.

The bright colors and namesake text brought me back to the Marc by Marc Jacobs totes from the West Village store that I used to carry my books in during college. Nowadays, in addition to Runway Marc Jacobs, the brand is also focusing on its streetwear line, Heaven, which exudes that unforgettable ‘90s grunge vibe.

The Inspiration

Throughout the pandemic, Jacobs took to social media to express more of his personal style and thoughts. Another main theme throughout: the positive message of inclusion and self-love.

In a recent post showing a video of last night’s show, the designer notes…

“On the journey back to doing what we love most, in the wake of immeasurable loss, loneliness, fear, anxiety and uncertainty, I am reminded of why creativity is so vital to our existence. To life.”

Jacobs has a long history with Bergdorf’s since the early days of his post-Perry Ellis career. Coming full circle, Runway Marc Jacobs will be sold exclusively at Bergdorf Goodman beginning this September.
