Being back on Long Island during this strange quarantine period has been beyond nostalgic. While the world at large is on lockdown and with self-isolation is set in place, I’ve been journal writing, taking a digital detox, and am feeling connected to my inner thoughts more than ever.

Spending less time on my phone has made me rediscover something I love: journaling. I still have my first diary which I just found the other day and laughed at the hot pink cover with Spottie Dottie (the cute Sanrio dalmatian cartoon character) and a mini silver lock.

The thing is, every time I write down my unfiltered hopes, fears, and dreams, something magical happens: it feels incredibly freeing

As a freelance writer, I’ve talked about the topic of writer’s block before because it’s a real issue that pops up in my life all the time. While some days, words come easily and quickly, there are countless hours I sometimes spend just staring at a blank piece of paper, writing and rewriting, thinking and overthinking.

Journaling is one tool that I use to untangle my web of thoughts.

And it can help you no matter what field of work you’re in.

Not thinking about what you’re scribbling down can unlock the creativity that you didn’t even know was inside you. To prevent distractions, don’t worry about if it makes sense or if you’re grammatically correct. Journaling can help you get to know yourself better and on a deeper level.

In addition, studies show that it can also help you solve problems more effectively. Think of it like therapy—best of all, it can be accessed anytime and is relatively cheap. But if you’re feeling fancy, you can invest in a nice journal that just might serve as an extra source of motivation to write (at least it does for me!).
