La Belugue in Luberon, South of France.

A couple of years ago, in June, Dex and I took a trip to Europe that included a two-day stay at La Belugue, the most charming bed and breakfast in the South of France. Nestled in Beaumont-de-Pertuis, a picturesque village in Luberon, this 18th-century farmhouse is full of character. I can’t recommend it highly enough!

Here’s everything you need to know about this gem before booking a stay.

The Story Of La Belugue

It may sound like a fairytale, but it’s even better because it’s a true story: La Belugue’s owners, Kelly and Philippe, met serendipitously as expats on the island of Sentosa, off the coast of Singapore. They were each there for work and just so happened to become neighbors who fell in love. After spending two and a half years working and traveling around Asia, they moved to France, which is Philippe’s homeland.

The couple started La Belugue in 2016, and it was inspiring to hear how it all began. On the first night of our visit, we had an apéro (pre-dinner gathering) with Kelly who prepared a delicious charcuterie board for us. As we enjoyed it with glasses of rosé from a local vineyard, she shared her journey of growing up in America, moving up the corporate ladder, traveling the world, then following her passion and opening La Belugue.

What Makes La Belugue Unique?

La Belugue means “the sparkle” in French. The B&B is the perfect place to unwind and regain your creative spirit. It’s more than just where you go to get a good night’s rest — it’s a destination within itself. The stay felt like visiting a friend’s home since the owners made us feel so welcome there.

La Belugue offers optional activities including:

  • Creative Retreats: Here, you can join exclusive week-long wellness retreats focusing on topics like memoir writing and photography. The retreats are hosted by Kelly and another expert in the field. They’ve had novelists and photographers teaching attendees at every level to hone their craft. Limited spots are available for each retreat to keep it personal and relaxed. Some activities included are workshops, cooking classes, meals, morning yoga sessions, daily excursions to local-only spots in Provence, and accommodations at La Belugue. Prices start at €5550 for single occupancy (private room with en suite bathroom) or €4950 if you’re traveling with a significant other (private king room with en suite bathroom) and may vary depending on the retreat.

  • Provencal Market Day Tour: Experience a truly local experience with a market visit to shop for fresh ingredients. This tour is part of a package that includes a cooking class and lunch where you can savor the seasonal cuisine that you’ve created. It can be overwhelming to shop the markets for non-French speakers but with an expert by your side, you’ll know exactly where to go, what to get, and have fun during the process! Prices start at €250 per person.
  • Cooking ClassesThe Provençal cooking classes are led by Kelly and run for three hours. You can learn how to cook traditional French meals such as Daube (a classic meat stew braised in wine), aioli (garlic that’s known as the ‘butter of Provence’), gratin (layers of finely sliced potatoes topped with a brown crust), tian (French baked vegetables), and more. Afterward, you’ll enjoy your meals at the farm table. Prices start at €150 per person with a two-person minimum, wine pairing included.
  • Provence Lavender Season TourOne of the reasons I wanted to visit the South of France was to see the lavender fields, and we saw several of them in the neighborhood. It was so magical stepping through the rows of lavender and smelling the sweet, floral, and earthy scent in the air. There are several lavender fields near La Belugue, and you can take a tour led by Kelly. Tours of the French beauty brand L’Occitane headquarters are also available and just a 20-minute drive away. Contact La Belugue for prices.
  • Wine ToursExplore French wines like a local! La Belugue’s wine tours let you journey through renowned wine regions filled with rich history and picturesque vineyards, led by experts. Choose between different packages like a 5-hour or 6-hour picnic that takes you to vineyards, with transportation from La Belugue. Prices start at €300 per person with a two-person minimum.

The Ambiance

If you’re looking for a quiet destination to unwind while still enjoying outdoor adventures, La Belugue is it. This rustic and cozy getaway is surrounded by lush trees, vibrant pink and red flowers, and charming string lights. Here, you can just relax, listen to the birds chirping, take a refreshing dip in the pool, and immerse yourself in the French way of life, all while appreciating the beauty of Provence.

There are three rooms (one king suite and two family suites) so it doesn’t ever feel too crowded. You’ll likely also find their two friendly dogs running around in the backyard.

One of the highlights of exploring the town was going to a fun community bread-making event. There was a huge oven set up outside, and we gathered around the table to make the bread, which we later enjoyed during lunch. The atmosphere had a heartwarming, small-town feel, and it seemed like everyone knew one another.

Dining Experience

In the mornings, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast that included freshly baked croissants, madeleines, fruits, yogurt, and fresh juices. For lunch, Kelly and Philippe prepared oysters, shrimp, and barbecue. They also made my new favorite, Tarte Tropézienne, a cake made with brioche dough and sprinkled with pearl sugar. To go with our meals, we sipped on specialty cocktails garnished with flowers from the garden.

That night, we visited Château La Coste, a sculpture park, art center, and winery that also features several restaurants. It’s a vibrant place where both locals and visitors gather to enjoy performances by local musicians. We began our evening by sharing a bottle of rosé at La Terrasse, and then we had dinner next door at Vanina, where they serve pizza cooked in wood-fired ovens. I ordered the mushroom pizza topped with thinly sliced potatoes and mozzarella — to this day, it’s still one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had!

How To Get To La Belugue

We updated our trip to include a visit to Paris, and I’m so glad we did! It was the most convenient starting point for us to fly into before heading to La Belugue. We landed at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris and then took a 3.5-hour train ride to the Aix-en-Provence TGV station.

Before going on the trip, we researched transportation options around Luberon. Most websites and friends recommended renting a car. However, we noticed that cabs were not very common, and Ubers didn’t run in the area. We ultimately decided against renting a car because the roads in some parts were super narrow and seemed hard to navigate. Thankfully, everything worked out. At the Aix-en-Provence TGV station, we ended up finding a cab that took us to La Belugue and back, which took about 45 minutes each way.
