The best fall boots are comfortable and chic for embracing the chilly weather and autumn leaves. Every time this season comes around, it gives me that nostalgic back-to-school feeling.
My favorite part of a new semester was always getting a new pair (or two, or three!) of shoes to step into the season on the right foot. Even though school’s been long finished for me, I still carry on the tradition of fall boot shopping.
For 2024, there are several fall boot trends that are popular for every occasion. From casual strolls to upscale parties or scenic hikes, there’s a shoe to fit your personal style. Think block heel ankle booties, knee boots, kitten heel booties, chunky combat boots, and more.
Read on for my curated guide on six types of best fall boots, many of which I’ve tested and others on my wishlist. Here’s to spicing up your fall outfit with new favorite pairs.
6 Types Of Fall Boots You Need For Every Occasion

Block Heel Ankle Booties
As a New Yorker, I aim for most of my boots to be versatile and practical. Block heel ankle booties are my favorite type of fall boots since the thicker heel makes it easier to walk around the city in. Most of the time, I choose low-heel styles below three inches.
One of my favorite options in this category is the Inez Paz 70 Stretch Booties in Ginger Suede. Ever since I got this pair, they have constantly been in my shoe rotation. These effortlessly combine comfort with style and match with so many outfits from day to night. Handmade in Spain, this brand prioritizes making the fit as perfect as possible. The proprietary plush insole and heel cushion give your feet some TLC with thoughtfully designed arch support. These run true to size and you can also choose between two widths: standard or roomy.

Kitten Heel Booties
Year after year, kitten heel booties remain one of the biggest fall boot trends. This style gives you the best of both worlds: comfort (thanks to the low height) and versatility. Easily pair these with a sweater for a casual look. You can also dress it up with a little black dress for a night out. The flattering silhouette and small lift of kitten heels elongate the leg without the strain of higher heels.
I recently got the LifeStride Guild 2 Booties (in the photo above) and honestly love how comfy they are! The heel height is 2.75 inches which makes it easy to walk in. I’ve worn these from morning to night and still felt fine after a long day. These shoes feature a Soft System technology that gives your feet support, flex, and cushioning to make every step effortless.
Another highlight that I appreciate is the traction sole. Unlike a lot of other shoes I’ve tried, these are not slippery and make me feel stable wearing them. The white color and metallic buckle add flair to any autumnal outfit. All of the styles from the brand are sold at reasonable prices and are so worth it!

Knee-High Fall Boots
For classic boots that never go out of style, look to knee-high versions. Since these are taller, they provide more warmth and coverage on chilly autumn days. I love wearing tights during the fall but am always cold so these boots are perfect to wear them with.
From everyday wear to fancier occasions, you can’t go wrong with a pair of black leather pointed-toe boots like this pair by Dolce Vita. These also give you a leg-lengthening effect, especially when worn with fitted bottoms.
Knee-high boot roundup:
Metallic Boots
For shoes that always brighten the mood, look to metallic boots. These under $200 light gold Dolce Vita Arya Boots are show-stopping heels that are just 2.4 inches tall. These are a fresh take on cute ankle boots thanks to the shiny hue that makes a bold statement.
You can pair this with a mini skirt or maxi skirt to amp up a fall top and jacket combo. Many wearers gave this pair five-star ratings and I can see why. After wearing these black boots a few times over a month so far, I’m in love. Also, I’m so glad this comes in half-size options. I would say get your usual size as it runs pretty standard and also comes in a wide calf version.

Cowboy Fall Boots
Of course, this roundup would not be complete without a pair of cowboy boots. This rugged style isn’t too precious and you can feel comfortable wearing them over and over again.
Cowboy leather boots are durable and most styles are made to last a long time. Like leather jackets, they might even look better with age. The worn-in style gives these boots personality and life. Pair them with jeans or a maxi dress for a touch of Western flair. Each style has a distinct look with intricate stitching, embellishments, or patterns that can let you express your personal style.

Combat Boots & Moto Boots
For an edgy aesthetic, wear combat boots. Originally designed for military use, this style is all about comfort, support, and durability. These will withstand tough weather conditions and are usually made with leather and thick rubber soles. These days, there are so many variations of combat boots. From a chic croc-embossed pair with heels to classic waterproof boots, combat boots are here to stay.
This season, moto boots are also popular. These are sleeker than combat boots and often feature details like buckles, zippers, or leather straps. Originally made for motorcycle riding, these styles are usually shorter and hit just above the ankle.

What Are The Fall Boot Trends In 2024?
This year, the keyword is comfort when it comes to boots. Autumn is a time of fresh beginnings, and adventures often involve being on your feet. For 2024, walkable shoes are in. Think block heel ankle booties below three inches, kitten heel booties, knee-high flat boots, combat boots, and moto boots.
What Are The Most Comfortable Fall Boots For Walking?
The most comfy pair of fall boots for walking depends based on your foot shape, width, and preferences. Typically, the easiest boots to walk in are flat (combat boots, moto boots, and Chelsea boots). If I’m not full-on walking for miles, I like to choose a low-heel boot (block heel or kitten heels like these LifeStride Guild 2 Booties that have a comfort foam footbed!) since it makes me feel more dressed up yet it’s still walkable. You can also add plush shoe inserts to make any pair more comfortable.
Where Are The Best Places To Shop Fall Boots?
Personally, I find it best to shop online to see all the fall boots in one place. Doing so makes it easy to categorize by color, style, and size. Some websites I love for shoe shopping are Nordstrom, Bergdorf Goodman, Dolce Vita, and more. Shop the styles above!
