National Lipstick Day 2022: Shop the Classics

From shiny to matte, red to berry, these lipsticks will never go out of style.
Celebrating National Lipstick Day with red lipstick in New York City.

July 29, marks National Lipstick Day. There’s something about swiping on a fresh lipstick bullet that instantly boosts my mood and confidence. To me, it’s the easiest way to feel dressed up, whether it’s a fancy or casual outfit kind of day.

Lipsticks were born in Ancient Mesopotamia more than 5,000 years ago and they were once made of crushed gems. Since then, it’s been worn, celebrated, and recreated. Throughout history, lipstick has been a signature for many, like Marilyn Monroe who famously wore red to Marilyn Manson who rocks crimson on repeat.

As a true Gemini, I love a variety of lipstick shades and usually choose according to mood. To celebrate National Lipstick Day, scroll on to find the ones I keep coming back to again and again.

From shiny to matte and red to berry, these will never go out of style.

Kilian Le Rouge Parfum Intoxicating Rouge Satin on a white background.

Kilian: Le Rouge Parfum Lipstick in Intoxicating Rouge Satin

I remember the first time I swiped on this Kilian ‘Le Rouge Parfum’ lipstick and was delightfully surprised by the fact that it’s scented. With a blend of gourmand and floral notes, it just feels luxe. No wonder, since the brand’s founder, Kilian Hennessy, is known for his fragrance creations (many of which are reminiscent of the cognac in his French family’s empire).

Anna Sui pink lipstick with a floral bullet design on a white background.

Anna Sui: Lipstick in High Rose

This lipstick launched in 2019 and I still consider it one of the best lipsticks. I can’t get over the rose-shaped bullet and butterfly design on the case — it looks like a work of art! Like Anna Sui’s clothing collections, her lineup of beauty goods is just as bold and beautiful.

Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Sexy Sienna on a white background.

Charlotte Tilbury: Matte Revolution Lipstick in Sexy Sienna

Charlotte Tilbury’s makeup has that modern spin on Old Hollywood feel. This ‘Sexy Sienna’ shade (named after Sienna Miller) has a golden coral matte color that brightens up the face and looks effortless. If you want a dramatic effect, add another layer for a more vibrant sun-kissed glow.

Tatcha Beautyberry Silk Lipstick on a white background.

4/11

Tatcha: Beautyberry Silk Lipstick

This Tatcha lipstick literally feels like silk and is inspired by the Japanese Beautyberry. The best part? It’s filled with 23-karat gold and antioxidants to soften and hydrate your lips. Trust me, it’s worth it!

M.A.C. lipstick in red Ruby Woo on a white background.

5/11

MAC: Retro Matte Lipstick in Ruby Woo

The ‘Ruby Woo’ lipstick made M.A.C. famous when it launched in 1999. What makes it different? The 12-hour wear blue-red shade flatters any skin tone (and may even help make your teeth look whiter). Think of it like the LBD of red lipsticks — you can always count on it to look good.

Lancôme: L’Absolu Rouge Hydrating Lipstick in 290 Poeme Matte on a white background.

Lancôme: L’Absolu Rouge Hydrating Lipstick in 290 Poeme Matte

My mom go-to brand for skincare is Lancôme, so it was one of the first beauty brands I’ve known as a teenager. We used to go shopping to pick up her favorite products and, of course, I had to try out all the lipsticks at the department store counter. This medium pink formula is infused with vitamin E to moisturize your lips, and it lasts up to eight hours.

ILIA Color Block High Impact Lipstick in Bardot Nude on a white background.

ILIA Color Block High Impact Lipstick in Bardot Nude

If reds and pinks aren’t your thing, try this light amber shade from clean beauty brand ILIA. The formula is made with apricot seed oil (to lock in moisture), castor seed oil (to soften and soothe) and mango seed butter (to increase elasticity).

NARS Lipstick in Dolce Vita on a white background.

NARS: Lipstick in Dolce Vita

Looking for a more subtle shade? This dusty rose shade from NARS gives you a hint of color and shine that’s lightweight, shine-boosting, and ultra hydrating. Key ingredients are passion fruit seed oil (to moisturize lips) and moringa oil (which helps preserve vibrancy).

Jill Stuart Beauty Lip Blossom in Feminine Lilac on a white background.

Jill Stuart Beauty: Lip Blossom in Feminine Lilac

In 2018, I went to a Jill Stuart show during NYFW and found a couple of beauty goods in the gift bag. I thought it was made just for the occasion, but the designer has been creating cosmetics for a while in Japan. Later that year, the Jill Stuart Beauty line launched in the U.S. Besides the packaging (which has a gorgeous fairytale-like aesthetic), the high-gloss lip blossoms are also a dream.

Lipstick Queen Lipstick in Old Flame on a white background.

10/11

Lipstick Queen: Lipstick in Old Flame

Like a mood ring, the color of this lipstick adjusts according to the person wearing it. I use this one in the summer since it feels like a lightweight lip balm but gives off a pink color (even though it looks bright orange!).

Dior Lip Glow in Sheer Berry on a white background.

11/11

Dior: Lip Glow in Sheer Berry

I discovered the Dior Lip Glow a few years ago while working on a beauty shoot. True to its name, it gives your lips a luminous “glow” and tons of shine. The formula is like an upgrade from lip balm since it also plumps lips and gives off a light berry color.

Happy National Lipstick Day! What’s your favorite shade?
