Happy National Lipstick Day 2020: Shop the Classics

Applying pink lipstick on a white background

Today, July 29, marks National Lipstick Day. Although I haven’t been wearing much lipstick lately during quarantine, it’s still my favorite kind of makeup. There’s something about swiping on a fresh bullet of color that instantly boosts my mood and confidence. Several studies show that women who regularly wear lipstick even have better posture—maybe it’s a psychological effect or something but apparently it’s true!

This year’s holiday may look a bit different as most of us are still spending the majority of our time inside. But even if you’re home or stepping out with a mask, there’s no harm in putting on your favorite lipstick for you.

From shiny to matte and red to berry, there are endless textures and shades of lipsticks out there. Since it was born in Ancient Mesopotamia more than 5,000 years ago (it was once made of crushed gems), lipsticks have been worn, celebrated, and recreated. Throughout history, lipstick has been a signature for many, like Marilyn Monroe who famously wore red to Marilyn Manson who rocks crimson on repeat.

As a true Gemini, I love a variety of lipstick shades and usually choose according to mood. Scroll on to see the ones I keep coming back to again and again over the years. I have some of these here with me on Long Island but the rest of my beauty stash is at home in NYC—hope to reunite with it all soon!

Anna Sui: Lipstick in Warm Rose

Lancôme: L’Absolu Rouge Hydrating Lipstick in Poême

Since my mom regularly uses Lancôme face creams, it was one of the first beauty brands I’ve known as a teenager. We used to go to Macy’s to pick up her favorite products and I would try out all the lipsticks. You can’t go wrong with this light pink shade. $32 [Shop Now]

Jill Stuart Beauty: Lip Blossom in Feminine Lilac

In 2018, I went to a Jill Stuart show during fashion week and found a couple of gorgeous beauty goods in the gift bag. I thought it was made just for the occasion, but the designer has been creating cosmetics for a while in Japan! Later that year, the Jill Stuart Beauty line launched in the U.S. and the lip blossoms are the best—the formula has a high-gloss shine and there’s also a built-in mirror on the cap. $24 [Shop Now]

Lipstick Queen: Lipstick in Old Flame

This light berry lipstick has long been a favorite since it goes on light but has a hint of color with a luminous glow. $34 [Shop Now]
