Today, July 29, marks National Lipstick Day. Although I haven’t been wearing much lipstick lately during quarantine, it’s still my favorite kind of makeup. There’s something about swiping on a fresh bullet of color that instantly boosts my mood and confidence. Several studies show that women who regularly wear lipstick even have better posture—maybe it’s a psychological effect or something but apparently it’s true!
This year’s holiday may look a bit different as most of us are still spending the majority of our time inside. But even if you’re home or stepping out with a mask, there’s no harm in putting on your favorite lipstick for you.
From shiny to matte and red to berry, there are endless textures and shades of lipsticks out there. Since it was born in Ancient Mesopotamia more than 5,000 years ago (it was once made of crushed gems), lipsticks have been worn, celebrated, and recreated. Throughout history, lipstick has been a signature for many, like Marilyn Monroe who famously wore red to Marilyn Manson who rocks crimson on repeat.
As a true Gemini, I love a variety of lipstick shades and usually choose according to mood. Scroll on to see the ones I keep coming back to again and again over the years. I have some of these here with me on Long Island but the rest of my beauty stash is at home in NYC—hope to reunite with it all soon!
I love that this new shade from Charlotte Tilbury is not quite red or berry, but somewhere in-between. Another favorite I’ve been using for a while is the Sexy Sienna shade that’s a coral peachy color and lasts up to 10 hours! $34 [Shop Now]
This lipstick literally feels like silk and is inspired by the Japanese Beautyberry. The best part? It’s filled with antioxidants and 23-karat gold. $55 [Shop Now]
Universally flattering, this highly pigmented shade from MAC is perhaps the most famous red lipstick of all since 1999. $19 [Shop Now]
Since my mom regularly uses Lancôme face creams, it was one of the first beauty brands I’ve known as a teenager. We used to go to Macy’s to pick up her favorite products and I would try out all the lipsticks. You can’t go wrong with this light pink shade. $32 [Shop Now]
I remember the first time I swiped on this lipstick and was delightfully surprised by the fact that it’s fragranced. With a blend of gourmand and floral notes, it just feels luxe. This one is super matte. $55 [Shop Now]
Clean beauty brand ILIA’s lipstick are filled with healthy and hydrating ingredients like apricot oil and mango seed butter. One swipe goes a long way. $28 [Shop Now]
I usually go for darker shades but love this dusty rose. It has a lightweight feel and conditions lips with moringa and passion fruit seed oils. $26 [Shop Now]
In 2018, I went to a Jill Stuart show during fashion week and found a couple of gorgeous beauty goods in the gift bag. I thought it was made just for the occasion, but the designer has been creating cosmetics for a while in Japan! Later that year, the Jill Stuart Beauty line launched in the U.S. and the lip blossoms are the best—the formula has a high-gloss shine and there’s also a built-in mirror on the cap. $24 [Shop Now]
Like a mood ring, the color of this lipstick adjusts according to the person wearing it. I use this one in the summer since it feels like a light chapstick but gives off a pink color to my lips even though it looks bright orange! $25 [Shop Now]
This light berry lipstick has long been a favorite since it goes on light but has a hint of color with a luminous glow. $34 [Shop Now]
